CRYOTHERAPY

WHAT IS CRYOTHERAPY?

Whole Body Cryotherapy uses cold temperatures to promote natural healing and wellness.  It works faster and more efficiently than traditional ice baths, using nitrogen vapor to create a dry chill that reaches -184 degrees Fahrenheit.  Benefits include muscle recovery, pain relief, reduced inflammation, and other mental and physical improvements.  A cryotherapy session only takes a few minutes, and relief can last for hours or days.  Regular use will improve the body’s natural recovery process over time.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Cryotherapy uses the gaseous form of nitrogen to lower the client’s skin surface temperature from normal body temperature to 30 degrees Fahrenheit in 30 seconds or less, keeping it that way for two-three minutes. The sudden drop in heat stimulates the temperature receptors, prompting the brain to transmit messages throughout the body – scanning all areas that may not be working to their fullest potential. Upon exiting, blood is pumped vigorously around the body, which in turn enhances the oxygen supply and removal of toxins. The cold also triggers the nervous system to release feel-good endorphins with the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response to extreme cold resulting in pain reduction.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE CRYOTHERAPY?

While every cryotherapy session is beneficial and you’ll feel immediate results, research has shown that you will experience improved and cumulative benefits with a minimum of 5-10 initial sessions, within a 2-4 week period. (Professional athletes will often have up to two sessions a day to help achieve peak performance). After that you can adjust your treatment schedule to maintain or improve on your results (e.g. once or twice a week).

WHAT RESULTS SHOULD I EXPECT?

During each session the body releases endorphins, which are hormones that make you feel good and energetic. The buoyant effects from each session last at least six – eight hours and increase with number of treatment sessions.  Typically most clients feel immediate decrease of inflammation, improved energy, and increased flexibility within the first few minutes or hours that will last for several hours or even days. Clients also may not feel the first impact until the next morning after a sleep cycle – many report deeper sleep and relief from joint and muscle pain, and inflammation over the following 48-72 hours.

IS IT SAFE?

Yes it is – the length of the session maxes at 3 minutes and our cryotherapy chamber has an auto shut-off timer. The liquid nitrogen that is used as a chilling agent does not come into contact with your skin, and it is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we breathe (actually 78% of it). Our certified cryotherapy technicians, trained on all safety and operational protocols, are capable of stopping the session should you want to get out before the session is done. Lastly, the cryotherapy chamber is equipped with an oxygen monitor and there is no lock on the door, so you can step out at any time.

WHO SHOULD NOT USE CRYOTHERAPY?

The minimum age for cryotherapy is 13 years old – individuals under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in order to receive cryotherapy.  The client should not be pregnant, have severe unmanaged hypertension (BP > 180/100), have or have had seizures, have a severe case of Raynaud’s syndrome, cold allergy, have any existing heart issue, have clots or have had a brain aneurysm, have any major vascular issues, open wounds or ulcers. Other contraindications exist so each client should fully read the waiver.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Due to the very low temperatures, all jewelry and metals below the head need to be removed before entering the cryotherapy chamber. Clients undress to their undergarments, and are required to wear socks, slippers and gloves, which will be provided. All other clothing is removed. You will also be provided with a robe, which you will remove once you are inside the chamber and the door is closed.
